PassiveCARE™

System Passivation

System Passivation

Stainless steel piping systems are periodically treated with strong acid solutions, such as nitric or phosphoric acids, to remove any trace oils or migrating metal ions form the piping system. This treatment is commonly referred to as passivation of the system. A system that has been treated, or passivated, will minimize any trace metal ions migrating into the high purity water systems or to the surface of any medical device. High purity water solutions are by their nature aggressive and will promote corrosion in stainless steel piping systems. Corrosion will cause metal ions to contaminate the high purity water or any environment a medical device might be placed. Minntech® recommends the use of PassiveCARE™ solution for effective system passivation.

Benefits

The benefits of PassiveCARE solution use versus nitric or phosphoric acid solutions include:

  • Validated Test Strips and Vapor Detection Device for operator safety.
  • 20% use dilution is very easy to use and prepare.
  • PassiveCARE is biodegradable.
  • Neutralization of PassiveCARE can be conducted on site reducing disposal costs. Please dispose of PassiveCARE in accordance with all applicable, Federal, State and Local regulations.
  • Nitric Acid is listed as a prohibited discharge pollutant under the Clean Water Act (CWA). Neither Peracetic Acid nor Hydrogen Peroxide are listed on the CWA.

Products currently used, including nitric and phosphoric acid solutions, are strong acids which attack and remove migrating metal ions form stainless steel piping systems. Commonly used concentrations are 20% nitric and 10% phosphoric acid.

PassiveCARE rinses from a system very rapidly and can be easily neutralized using caustic soda or other alkaline solutions.

PassiveCARE is a peracetic acid based product that will biodegrade when it comes in contact with metal ions in the system in which it is used.

The manufacturers of PassiveCARE will pursue the potential of ASTM mention of the use of this solution in future revisions of guidance documents.

The licensed product is covered by U.S. Patent No. 6,645,400 owned by Siemens Water Technologies Corporation.
