About Us
Medivators Reprocessing Systems assists customers to minimize endoscopy-related nosocomial infections by developing, manufacturing, and marketing a comprehensive range of endoscope reprocessing equipment, chemicals and accessories. We offer a diverse range of products and service solutions to address the needs of a low-volume clinic through to those of a fully integrated GI facility.
The company was founded in 1985 in Rochester, Minnesota. Medivators developed its first product, the Ott Disinfector for flexible endoscopes, through a licensing agreement with the Mayo Clinic in 1986.
The release of the DSD-91E Disinfector, the first dual-basin asynchronous automated endoscope reprocessor (AER), occurred in 1991. Subsequent models of this AER have been the company’s flagship product line since its introduction. Plastic machining and assembly of AERs began in-house in 1992.
In March 1996, Medivators was acquired by Cantel Industries, Inc. (Since renamed Cantel Medical Corp.), a healthcare company concentrating primarily in infection prevention and control products, and diagnostic and therapeutic medical equipment.
In March of 1998 Medivators broadened its product line through the acquisition of Chris Lutz Medical (CLM), a southern California company devoted solely to the manufacture and distribution of semi-automated endoscope reprocessors (SAERs) and related equipment. The CLM units were offered as compact systems that could either be mounted on a countertop or a purpose-designed cart and were ideal for reprocessing facilities with limited space. In September of the same year, the company achieved ISO 9001 certification, allowing Medivators to CE mark products being shipped into the European Communities.
Early in 2000, Medivators introduced Rapicide High-Level Disinfectant and Sterilant, a ready-to-use liquid chemical germicide for use in automatic endoscope reprocessing machines. This new chemistry enabled flexible endoscopes to be high-level disinfected in a fraction of the time then required by traditional germicides. This product has consistently achieved double-digit growth since its introduction and is now used by more than 1,600 endoscopy facilities in the United States.
In September 2001 Cantel acquired Minntech Corporation, a Minnesota-based Company specializing in the development and marketing of unique filtration technology and dialyzer reprocessing systems. Medivators then relocated to Minntech’s Plymouth campus in September 2002 and has since operated as one of three business groups within Minntech Corporation.
Through an exclusive agreement with IMS srl, an Italian company focused on the development of room-temperature sterilization and high level disinfection products for surgical instruments and medical devices, Medivators added Adaspor cold chemical sterilant to its product line. Medivators sales and marketing activity for Adaspor commenced in 2003.
Additionally in 2003, Medivators acquired the assets of Dyped BV, a Netherlands-based manufacturer of modular endoscope reprocessing systems and accessories. The Dyped MDS asynchronous reprocessor has been modified to meet customer needs and regulatory guidelines outside of the Netherlands, and will provide state-of-art technology and an ergonomic design platform for future Medivators reprocessors.
In the United Kingdom and the Netherlands Medivators’ products are marketed and serviced by subsidiary companies and elsewhere outside the United States, Medivators’ products are sold through independent in-country distributors. Many of these in-country distributors are also Pentax and Fujinon endoscope distributors. Medivators has direct International sales and marketing representation based in the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Asia, including Chine and Latin America.
By the close of 2007, there were more than 5,500 Medivators’ endoscope reprocessors in use worldwide, of which one third have been installed outside the United States. Of this international total, 50% are in select European markets and 20% in Asia/Pacific markets. Medivators’ international business contributed nearly 30% of total revenue in fiscal year 2007.
In September of 2007, Medivators acquired Verimetrix and its innovative Veriscan automated endoscope leak tester. This new leak testing device enables facilities to accurately detect leaks before they become a major (and costly) issue.
In the United States, Medivators has its own team of 24 sales representatives, 21 Field Service Engineers and 9 Clinical Support Specialists. In addition to those teams, Medivators employs an extensive in-house support group using highly-trained technical and customer service personnel. Regional sales and service management are based throughout the United States, with additional management and marketing located at Minntech Corporate headquarters in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Medivators Reprocessing Systems will continue to play a major role in the healthcare industry by pursuing products and services that meet the reprocessing needs of endoscopy facilities around the world. It is our intention to be a global medical device company providing superior cost-effective products and services, with a commitment to quality, customers, employees and innovation.
